Rail monitoring
Inertial and gyroscopic sensing applied to rail infrastructure monitoring.
What it is
Track geometry moves. Ground settles, rails creep, and the deviation that matters is usually far too small to see and far too slow to notice until something is wrong. Measuring it today generally means a dedicated inspection vehicle and a scheduled possession of the line.
An inertial reference good enough to hold its own attitude between fixed points turns that into a measurement any vehicle can take while it runs. The requirement is a gyroscope that does not drift over the length of a section, in a package that survives being bolted to a bogie. That is an inertial sensing problem, and it is the newest of the capabilities on this site.
Example applications
- IMU / gyro
- An inertial measurement unit riding an ordinary vehicle records track geometry continuously, so a section is assessed from journeys that were happening anyway rather than from a possession.
