Mag NDT

Non-destructive testing using magnetic sensing, reading through material rather than around it.

  • Pipeline inspection
  • Electronics manufacturing
  • Automotive and aerospace parts manufacturing
A magnetic sensor scanning a component wall, with flux leaking out around a subsurface flaw and the trace peaking directly above it.
A section of large-diameter steel pipeline crossing open terrain, weathered surface and weld seams visible along its length.
Generated image, not a photograph of Mesa Quantum. Steel that has to be inspected from the outside, without being opened and without being taken out of service.

What it is

Magnetic non-destructive testing works because a flaw inside a component changes how flux passes through it. Corrosion, a crack, a void or a bad joint all leak field where sound material would not, and a sensitive magnetometer held outside the part can read that leak. Nothing is cut, nothing is dismantled, and the part can often stay in service.

The limit has always been the sensor. Reading a small leakage field through a thick wall, in an industrial environment, from a head that a person or a robot can actually carry, is a different problem from doing it on a bench. Making that head small, stable and repeatable is the manufacturing work this capability depends on.

Example applications

Pipeline inspection
Wall loss, corrosion and weld defects are found from outside the line rather than by cutting it open or taking it out of service.
Electronics manufacturing
Current paths inside a finished assembly can be checked without contact, which finds the joint that is failing rather than the one that is visible.
Automotive and aerospace parts manufacturing
Subsurface flaws in structural parts are caught before assembly, on the line, without destroying the part being tested.
